The government’s tough-love budget has given many of us a reminder that we need to continuously invest in ourselves and in our careers. With a gloomy international forecast, even though the WA economy is moving along without too much disruption (we commiserate with what is happening in Vic and other parts of Australia where mass closures are on their way), it REALLY is time for all professionals to think about what skills they need to add to their kit-bag.
We know that Australia is a project-powerhouse; that said, many professionals are STILL without formal qualifications in project management and project-specific subject areas. NOW is the time to think about the future and think about regularly updating your skill-set, adding qualifications to your experience base so that the two provide you with some level of certainty in the future.
Strengthen your CV
We try to avoid the ‘R’ word, but its never far away from our minds, is it? Experience on its own is not enough – it MUST be balanced by education. Think about the skills you have and put a plan in place to get those skills formally recognised. Always use some form of accredited training – this will serve you well when times are tough! And do NOT wait until you are being let go from your workplace to think about training – do it in a planned manner throughout the year!
Finally, if you can get accreditation in your field (those extra letters after your name), then go the extra mile and do it! For Project Managers, Project Engineers and anyone in a leadership project position, we look at accreditation from PMI (the Project Management Institute) such as PMP®. Some organisations, particularly government bodies, value the Prince2® accreditation.
Remember this is not just a ‘nice to have’ – there are financial benefits in the market from having these accreditations.
What’s on offer?
In June, we offer our first Prince2® Foundation + Practitioner course – this is through our partners, Inspiring Projects, whom we highly recommend. Dates for this course are June 9th – 13th: this is for both the Foundation and Practitioner and includes 2 exams. Contact us on email@example.com for more information.
This course is ideal for those of you who have already obtained a Diploma of Project Management, as you can now start building your knowledge of different methodologies being used in the marketplace. At the end of this course, should you successfully pass the exams, you will be a credentialed Prince2® Practitioner.
For those of you with new team members on your projects, we are also running a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice in June – Dates are 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th. Contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on this course – we still have some places remaining but this is filling up very quickly.
We continue to support project professionals in their career development. Contact us on email@example.com if you have started a new role and need assistance from a performance coach. In many medium – large organisations, this option for support is on offer to those newly hired at CXO level and those in key positions. Even if this is not on offer in your workplace, ASK!!
We are also running some technology courses (MS Project) with Master Builders WA in Jolimont. Email us for details on firstname.lastname@example.org.
